U.S. Marines veteran Scott Olsen served 2 tours of duty in Iraqdead-head_Monte-scott_olsen_marine.jpg

Official Veterans For Peace Statement on 26 Oct 2011
Regarding Occupy Oakland Incident with Oakland Police

vfp_logo_100.jpgVeteran For Peace member, Scott Olsen, a Marine Corps veteran twice deployed to Iraq, is in hospital now in stable but serious condition with a fractured skull. He was struck by a police projectile fired into a crowd in downtown Oakland, California in the early morning hours of 26 Oct 2011. Other people were injured in the assault and many were arrested after Oakland police in riot gear were ordered to evict people encamped in the ongoing "Occupy Oakland" movement. Olsen is also a member of Iraq Veterans Against the War.

VFP members are involved with dozens of these local "occupy movement" encampments and we support them fully. In Boston, for example, our members, wearing VFP shirts and carrying VFP flags, stood between a line of police and the encampment, urging police to "join the 99%" and not evict the protesters. In that case, several of our members were banged and bruised when the police decided instead to carry out their eviction orders.

In Oakland, last night, a similar thing happened, according to VFP Chapter 69 member and Navy veteran, Joshua Sheperd, who said he went to downtown Oakland "to see if, as a VFP member, I could help still the anger...to be between the police and the protesters...it seemed unconscionable to me that the police use the cover of darkness like that to do what they were doing." Fortunately, he was not injured in the police assault that left Olsen with a fractured skull

As with virtually every example of the occupy movement across the country, those encamped were conducting themselves peacefully beforehand, protesting current economic, social and environmental conditions in the U.S. brought about by decades of corporate control, a criminal financial industry and wars in Iraq and Afghanistan that are driving the U.S. global empire into bankruptcy. These "occupy movement" participants are telling us something we need very desperately to hear. They should be listened to, not arrested and brutalized.

Police in the majority of cities are acting with restraint and humanity towards the encampments, but Veterans For Peace will not be deterred by police who choose to use brutal tactics. In fact, as happens with repression everywhere, more people join the cause. We do believe that the rank and file police officers are part of the 99%, the overwhelming majority of Americans who are suffering at the hands of an intolerable system. Layoffs and cutbacks in city after city prove that we must join together to demand justice for all.

We send our very best to Scott Olsen and his family and wish him a speedy recovery to health.

We shall not be moved.

What actually happened at the West Palm Beach Tea Party Protest on 4/14/2009. No racial slurs, no arrests, no offensive signs, no exposed genitalia, no fake blood, etc. Pretty boring, but a world away from how it as portrayed by the media and windbag pundit celebrities who should not breed. -- Producer: NoiseCollector

Supporters of Occupy Wall Street staged a massive demonstration in Times Sq. on October 15. The New York City Police Department seemed to make the demonstration as difficult as possible. The side walks were fenced off with few entrances and exits. If you were on the side walk the Police would not allow you to stop walking to take pictures, or video. The center promenade was divided into a series of cages, many were for police use only. Tourists, New Yorkers, as well as Demonstrators were enraged by the police caging them like animals, and not allowing them to cross streets at intersections, or walk around freely. After three weeks of beating, macing, and arresting peaceful demonstrators, people are beginning to question the police's motives. The Police Department just received 4.6 million dollars from J P Morgan Chase, one of the companies that the Occupy Wall Street demonstrators are protesting. Corporate America has bought our government by paying for politicians election campaigns. Are they now buying our police departments? What did they give them that money for, and what do they expect in return? -- Producer: John J. Coghlan

the Tea Party Movement is a Politcal Movement
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tea_Party_movement
The Tea Party movement (TPM) is an American populist political movement that is generally recognized as conservative and libertarian. TPM has sponsored protests and supported political candidates since 2009. It endorses reduced government spending, opposition to taxation in varying degrees, reduction of the national debt and federal budget deficit, and adherence to an originalist interpretation of the United States Constitution.
the Occupy Wall Street Movement is not a Politcal Movement
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Occupy_Wall_Street
Occupy Wall Street (OWS) is an ongoing series of demonstrations in New York City based in Zuccotti Park in the Wall Street financial district. The protests were initiated by the Canadian activist group Adbusters. They are mainly protesting social and economic inequality, corporate greed, corruption and influence over government — particularly from the financial services sector — and lobbyists. The protesters' slogan, "We are the 99%", refers to the difference in wealth between the wealthiest 1% and the rest of the population.

The original protest began on September 17, 2011, and by October 9, similar demonstrations were either ongoing or had been held in 70 major cities and over 600 communities in the U.S. Internationally, other "Occupy" protests have modeled themselves after Occupy Wall Street, in over 900 cities worldwide.

I can tell you the reason for the contrast... I left early to go to a night class, most of the other people went home shortly after because they had to go to work to feed their families and cannot afford to camp out and live on the streets while their kids, jobs, and pets die by themselves.

If tea party protests lasted for more than a few hours they would have similar problems, but more like a neal diamond parking lot than a 2 live crew lot scene like you got there with your skinheads and cair and all sorts of diametrically opposed people.

Interesting stuff.

I imagine he was in the tree to get a better view. I've climbed into trees dozens and dozens of times. I know scores of people that have climbed into trees dozens of times. Take a look at these kids.

BoyClimbingTree.jpg

Looks pretty harmless to me. Climbing into a tree is a peaceful and non-aggressive activity. Millions and millions of people climb into trees each year. We have a cop in downtown Denver blasting his shotgun from close range at a young man perched peacefully in a tree. I've never seen such bizarre behavior in my life!

Why are these Tea Party people packing guns to rallies? This is also very bizarre to me.

Whatever his reason for being in that tree, clearly shooting him was the proper response. I'm sure the cop that did it was just afraid he'd be hit with leaves and acorns. You just can't negotiate with these radicals!

Scott Olsen 'cannot talk' after injury at Occupy Oakland protest

Iraq war veteran is believed to have sustained damage to speech center of his brain

Scott Olsen, the Iraq war veteran who was seriously injured by a police projectile during a protest in Oakland, has regained consciousness but "cannot talk".

Olsen, 24, is communicating with friends and family at his bedside by writing notes, but his injury is believed to have damaged the speech centre of his brain, according to Keith Shannon, who served with Olsen in Iraq.

"He cannot talk right now, and that is because the fracture is right on the speech center of his brain," said Shannon. "However, they are expecting he will get that back."

Shannon added that Olsen's "spelling is not near what it used to be".

"The doctors expect that he will have a full recovery," said Shannon, who is due to visit Olsen on Friday afternoon. "However, it is going to be a long road ahead for him."

Olsen was "really happy" to see his family, Shannon added.

A spokesman for Highland General Hospital confirmed Olsen could not talk, but said he "understands everything" doctors and family are saying. His family flew to be at his bedside on Thursday. The spokesman said Olsen remained under observation to determine if he needs surgery. His condition is "fair".

Video footage posted to YouTube shows Olsen lying motionless in front of a police line after apparently having been hit. A group of up to 10 protesters gather around him, but a police officer can be seen throwing a device close to the group which then explodes with a bright flash and loud bang, scattering the protesters. The video then cuts to footage of protesters carrying Olsen away as he bleeds from the head.

Oakland Mayor Jean Quan, who was in Washington DC when the clashes occurred, has sought to distance herself from the police action.

"I only asked the chief to do one thing: to do it when it was the safest for both the police and the demonstrators," she said.

You don't have to support the movement to recognize why attacking peaceful protestors is wrong. So you really have no sympathy for that guy? All he was doing was standing there. planted agitators? they plant themselves into most demonstrations in the SF Bay Area, you've seen it, right BD?

I've heard (on the internet-haha) of peeps being planted in the Tea Party crowd, to yell out racial slurs. Crap! I hope I didn't give anyone any idea's. Actually, I expect it in the next election cycle, I'll be the first to take him to task. Having a friend in the Pleasanton PD will come in handy to expose some "double agent". Such bigots would be shouted down, but the media sound byte would NOT include that part - Believe it! Every movement has to be careful of outside troublemakers, some just there to F with the cops and loot, and some planted on purpose. Wouldn't you agree, Monte?

Btw, MB,I decided to post here again, just less insulting or personal, because I see and feel that you are a good kind person - hey, everybody has a right to be wrong :)

I agree. The Denver Press fits that model. Who's agitating who, in this crappy non-story? The Press is 'not' supposed to be the story. I can't think of ONE person - in the 99 per cent of us - that has ever said, 'Everyone in the one per cent club is a bad person.'

Though the OWS is endorsed by the American Nazi Party and American Communist Party, the Thug Hugo Chavez and the Leader of Iran, so far, don't worry, i equate Obama to a rising Hitler, a man who hoodwinked the Germans into using Jews, Gays, Gypsy's, Christians etc as scapegoats to justify their evil deeds.

Too bad if the one injured guy was a vet, he and everyone should have complied with the REPEATED police warnings. Shit happens when you break the law!

You KNOW that there was a street and criminal element in that crowd, purposely inciting violence. I laugh LOL at your ignorance. If you conduct peaceful protest and comply with the agreed rules, there is no violence. I hold the OWS to blame for any injuries. The police are people who have families and they protect the mean streets of Oakland with their lives. I'm not ashamed, but you should be ashamed for allowing anarchists and the street criminal element into your ranks.

I am a Vietnam Vet, and the same SCUM on the left spat on us when we returned, and now you laud one injured Vet who's your new poster boy, you hate the military on your whim and then you prop him up a vet at your whim, you decide as it suits you. I agree with some of what High Flow said, tho the true story was no doubt an unruly crowd trying to provoke the police, so they could have better headlines as being victims of the "pigs" a lot of them hate.

I have a good friend who is an Alameda Co Deputy Sheriff, soon to retire. He has patrolled downtown Oakland for years and knows how crazy violent Oakland is. Where I live, I'm about 50yds from the tracy mausoleum where the 5 Oakland policemen who were killed 2-3yrs ago are interred. They were good decent people, not pigs. Fuck any of you who think the oakland police are pigs. If you look for trouble, don't whimper and whine when it comes, you can comply the easy way or the hard way and if you chose violence and riots, don't bitch and moan when trouble comes your way. It's called bad karma, dumbass!

There was a similar shooting incident by the Ohio State National Guard at Kent State University on the Commons on May 1, 1970. Numerous students were shot and killed. One of the victims killed there was William Knox Schroeder. He had been walking from one class to the next at the time he was shot and killed by the Ohio National Guard. Schroeder was a member of the campus ROTC chapter.

College campuses around the US erupted. There were protests, student strikes, and campus takeovers.

What was the "official response" by the Grateful Dead? The Boys played a free benefit concert at the M.I.T. protest on May 6, 1970. For me, this was by far GD's finest moment.

"For me, this was by far GD's finest moment."

I tend to agree.
